Our firm traces its Spokane roots back, deep into the 20th century with the Buchanan Funeral Home on West 3rd Ave in Spokane, which was established in 1901. On December 1, 1920, the Buchanan Funeral Home was purchased by Emmett Hennessey and Charles Calloway. This purchase expanded their business, Hennessey-Calloway Funeral Parlor (est. 1875) in Walla Walla.

In 1934, Hennessey-Calloway Funeral Home purchased Edward’s Manufacturing Building at 2203 N. Division. This was the home of the Miss Spokane Wash Dresses Company. The company had produced casual dresses “for house, garden, porch and street wear,” according to advertisements.

Upon Charles Calloway’s death in 1935, the company name was changed to Hennessey Funeral Home, with Emmett and his brother Daniel working side by side for many years.

Emmett and his wife Mary had three sons and one daughter. Sons Charles, Patrick, and Harry followed in their father’s footsteps, becoming funeral directors, and in 1959, dad and his three sons were working together. Upon Emmett’s death in 1964, Charles was voted in as the president. Ten years later Charles retired and his son Charles Jr. (“Paddy” or “Chuck”) assumed the helm of the family ship.

In the Spring of 1995, Chuck built the Hennessey Valley Funeral Home & Crematory at 1315 North Pines Road. He took great pride in serving the fast-growing Valley community. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home & Crematory, after almost 30 years, stands today as the Valley's premier funeral provider, and ONLY on-site crematory providing peace of mind to families. The community lost a great man who did many good and fun things for our community when Paddy died in 2011. His legacy is felt far and wide with his many contributions to the community.
