Dorothy Ann Guffin

March 10, 1929 ~ April 27, 2023 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Tribute

Dorothy Ann Blessing Guffin joined her husband, Bob, in heaven on April 27, 2023, surrounded by members of her family.

Dorothy was born in Spokane, Washington, on March 10, 1929, the third of four daughters of Anthony and Emma Tank Blessing.  She attended St. Ann’s, Holy Names, and Stevens elementary schools and graduated from Marycliff High School in 1947.

In August of 1946 Dorothy met the man she would marry after he returned from the war and found that his family had moved in next door to hers.  Dorothy and Robert “Bob” Guffin were married two years later on April 17, 1948, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Spokane.

Over the next eleven years Dorothy and Bob had five children—two girls and three boys.  Dorothy’s life centered around her family.  Vacations were usually camping trips which Dorothy truly enjoyed.  The time outside gave her an opportunity to relax while watching her children swim in the lake, play card games around the picnic table, enjoy s’mores around the evening campfires or just watch the stars in the night skies.

Dorothy was active in her children’s lives, doing such things as serving as a lunch monitor in their classrooms at St. Charles Catholic School, going to pee-wee baseball games, cheering at football games, working at school carnivals, leading family sing-alongs while playing the piano, and making winter ice ponds in the backyard, just to name a few.

As her children got older Dorothy decided to go to work in the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. District Court in Spokane where she worked until she retired in the early ‘90’s.

It was after her retirement that Dorothy became a Gonzaga basketball fan.  Because her kids were older and she was retired she had the time to turn some of her attention to the Bulldogs.  She watched every game, recording each game’s scores.  She knew the names of all the players and cheered loudly and fretted nervously during each game.

Dorothy is survived by her five children, Linda Reedy (Dick) of Portland OR, Kathleen Tillman of Coeur d’Alene ID, Dave Guffin (Shannon) of Post Falls ID, Rob Guffin (Lindi) of Toronto Canada, and Paul Guffin (Karen) of Usk WA; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, who died February 27, 2022, her parents, her infant brother, Michael, and her three sisters, Catherine Dahl, Margaret Phillips, and Betty Williams.

A service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery on May 24 at 11:00.  The family wishes to express our deep appreciation to the staff at Evergreen Fountains Senior Living Community in Spokane Valley for the care given to both Bob and Dorothy for the last four to five years of their lives.  Donations in Bob’s and Dorothy’s memory may be given to St. Mary Catholic Parish at stmaryspokane.org.  Go to the menu and select GIVE.  List your Donation Designation as MEMORIAL GIFT.  Or a donation may be given to a charity of your choice.
