Eldon Richard Kauffman "Gpa", 83, passed away at home in Spokane Valley, Washington, on July 16, 2020. Eldon was born to Jacob Michael and Greta Bernice (Wolfer) Kauffman in Woodburn, Oregon, on December 15, 1936. Eldon resided in southern California from 1965 to 2013, when he moved to Spokane Valley.
Eldon graduated from Western Mennonite High School in 1956 and earned his AA degree from El Camino College in 1976. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Grayback SSG-574 and USS Barbero SSG-317 Submarine Division Eleven as an Electronics Technician and Petty Officer with conduct award from 1959-1963.
Eldon married Sharon Lynn Austin in Los Angeles, California, in 1969. Together they had one son and one daughter. They later divorced in 1985 and Sharon preceded Eldon in death on August 11, 2013.
Eldon worked in the aerospace industry as an electrician and was very proud to work on the Saturn Rocket. He retired as the Head Electrician from Reynolds Metals in Torrance, California. He was a certified scuba diver and enjoyed horse racing, time with family, and history. Eldon was also a member of the Moose Lodge.
Eldon was very clever and quick-witted. He was knowledgeable and patriotic. He will be remembered fondly by his family and friends.
Eldon is survived by his daughter, Tina Marie Kauffman-Koon, who cared for him for the last 7 years while he lived with her; brother, Dennis Kauffman; sisters, Iris Esch and Janice Thompson; grandchildren, Tyler Nelson, Mandy Nelson, Briana Koon, Michael Koon, and great grandchildren, Shellbe Nelson, Kohlton Nelson, and Joshua Koon; his son Kurtis Eldon Kauffman and his grandchildren Wren Kauffman, Jacob Kauffman and Allison Kauffman. Eldon was preceded in death by brother, David Kauffman.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2020. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to request the Zoom link.
