Tribute

Mary Ann Nichols Semple, 81, formerly of Erie, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, WA, with her children at her side.  She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Paul Nichols and Anne Everson Nichols.

Mary Ann graduated from Strong Vincent High School, Class of 1957, in Erie, PA.  Following graduation, she attended Grove City College and Elmira College. A diligent and conscientious employee, Mary Ann worked for the New York State Correctional Facility at Elmira, NY, the National Park Service at Ft. Story, VA, and later with Event Staffing, Inc., of Norfolk, VA. She patriotically served as a USO volunteer.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, maintained unwavering faith in God, and had a limitless sense of fellowship. Mary Ann had a kind, warm heart and loved to laugh. Her contagious smile brightened every room she entered.

A fun-loving mother, Mary Ann cherished each moment with her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Over the years, she enjoyed countless adventures traveling across the United States and around the world with her children. Mary Ann was an avid cook and baker. She also delighted in singing and being outdoors, whether picnicking, camping, or hiking in the countryside and along the beach.

Always supportive and reassuring, she dedicated her life to her family. Mary Ann encouraged her children to pursue their dreams and took great pride in watching them thrive.

Mary Ann is survived by her children: Dr. George J. Semple II (Charlotte); Stephen Semple; Linda J. Semple, RN; and Dr. Charles A. Semple (Glenda); and four wonderful grandchildren: George III, J.T., Julia, and James. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Nichols; her brother-in-law, John McLaughlin; her nephew, John McLaughlin Jr.; and her niece, Bryn McLaughlin. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carol McLaughlin.
